Aquatic Therapy

Kelly H.
As a ten year member of the United States Ski Team and a two time National Champion in the sport of Freestyle Skiing Aerials, I suffered a serious injury during a World Cup event held in China. I chose Orthosports because of their high quality of service, their care for people, experience, professionalism, and their facility. Working in the pool for water therapy has been absolutely amazing. The pool program allowed me to gain movement helping me to progress much faster with my rehab. Together, we are looking forward to putting me back on the top of the World!

Orthosports Physical Therapy offers an aquatic exercise unit at our Amherst office, which is maintained near 90 degrees. The AquaFit Underwater Treadmill System is designed to provide hydrotherapy with aerobic exercise, providing a high-resistance, low-impact aerobic workout. Exercise programs are designed for your unique needs. This unit has a treadmill with speeds from 0.3 to 8 mph. Depth adjusts up to 48 inches. You can sit, stand, walk or run. Jets can be used for a soothing back massage or to enhance resistance while exercising.

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy carefully integrates therapeutic exercises with the hydrodynamic principles of water and is directed by a licensed physical therapist. The goal is to take advantage of the properties of the water to assist the patient in attaining function sooner, especially with conditions that traditional treatment approaches are not tolerated. The water provides a perfect environment for rehabilitation of the entire body as it reduces or eliminates the effect of gravity.

Water is an excellent medium to provide needed support to the spine and extremities, and can be useful in assisting or resisting movement. A summarized list of benefits includes the following:

  • Decreased Weight Bearing
  • Decreased Muscle Spasms
  • Decreased Edema
  • Decreased Pain
